By Rudhyar’s account [‘Astrological Mandala’, pp 245-248] the ‘story’ buried in this sequence supposedly unfolds something like this …

Capricorn 26° … “one is born with a potential power to master and manipulate collective sentiment (‘water’ as a symbol), in order to foster change in social and political values” (see later : Capricorn 30°).

Capricorn 27° … “Development of this power first involves ‘following the footsteps’ of great spiritual leaders of one’s culture, that is, its finest Teachers and Sages …”

Capricorn 28° … “under whose tutelage develops, first, a capacity for ‘clairaudience’ (that is, an intuition that not only hears but comprehends the prompts of ’inner voices’) …”

Capricorn 29° … “and later, ‘clairvoyance’ (that is, the capacity to see through the facts of everyday existence to the deeper realities underlying them) …”

Capricorn 30° … “by which one achieves the qualification required for membership of the intangible “inner government which has the power – knowingly or unknowingly – to guide the evolution of our planet and of mankind.” (see earlier : Capricorn 26°).

This then, is how Rudhyar urges us to appreciate the “tone and direction” of Terry Jones’ life. However, unlike Martin Luther King and Joy Adamson whose SOLAR degrees fell within this sequence, in Terry Jones’ case the qualities of Capricorn 26° to 30° are PRENATAL hence “deeply rooted in the past [and have] a somewhat compulsive character … operating in the unconscious, surging, often unexpectedly and startlingly, out of his psychic depths” [Rudhyar, ‘Lunation Cycle’, p.120]. That’s because Terry was an Aquarian (Sun) and his prenatal lunation fell in Capricorn, an unusual situation. Rudhyar says of this …

“If both the new moon before birth and the natal sun are in the same sign, the quality of this sign pervades freely the whole nature of the person; but if the natal sun and the new moon before birth are in two different signs, a basic dualism should be more or less strongly in evidence in the personality” [Note 5]

So, just what was this OTHER half of Terry’s dualism – the Aquarian Sun – and the potential purpose, or ‘dharma’ it indicates? I think the following reflection on the deeper meaning of Aquarius from Rudhyar’s book, ‘Astrological Insights into the Spiritual Life’, might help answer that question for us …

“Strange as it may seem to many people, a sense of humour is quite indispensable to a successful pursuit of a spiritual life. No individual can be truly spiritual who, at times, is not able to laugh at his or her self, and to smile at the theatrical gestures and claims of others. ‘Taking oneself too seriously’ is one of the most common and insidious dangers a person meets on the spiritual Path. A sense of proportion, and the realization of how small a role one may play in the cosmic ritual of world existence, needs to be cultivated, if one’s idealistic and ’so-well-intentioned’ service to a social or spiritual community is not to backfire and throw most of its warmth upon an ego becoming increasingly full of its own importance. Today we readily tend to glorify out of all proportion anything related to the zodiacal sign Aquarius. This may be unfortunate, at least from the spiritual point of view, for it can lead to what Carl Jung called ‘self-inflation’ and to extravagant hopes concerning what the ‘New Age’ may bring. It is one thing to deliberately and perhaps emotionally dedicate oneself to ‘world service’, and another to glamorize one’s ability to carry on such a dedication in everyday pursuits without faltering. The one antidote against self-inflation is what Aquarius can bring : a sense of humour” [Note 6]

There we have it : an Aquarian destiny most of the time, but along with the task of perfecting a sense of humour there occasionally surges – “often unexpectedly and startlingly, out of his psychic depths” – an eye that sees (clairvoyance) and a mind that masters and manipulates collective sentiment in order to foster change in social and political values, in so doing in howsoever small a way “guiding the evolution of our planet and of mankind”. Seem reasonable to you? Have a look at the photo in the middle of the prebirth lunation chart. Does that look like a guy who’s trying to juggle clairvoyant world service with a sense of humour? FWIW, I think he did pretty well, both as messiah [Note 7], and when needed, as a very naughty boy [Note 8]  🤹‍♀️
