Pre-Birth Lunation Chart

Noel Tyl’s been one of my favourite astro authors over the years, just one of those go-to guys for concise delineation. I was naturally curious as his honoured memory drifted by today, so I ran up his birth-chart then pre-birth New Moon degree to see if I could try and find “the tone and direction of the life”, as Rudhyar would say when trying to get a feel for the core of a chart.

The focal degree in this case turned out to be Sagittarius 22°, as a Sabian Symbol …

Sagittarius 22° … “A chinese laundry”

This is a 2nd stage symbol in the five-fold sequence spanning Sagittarius 21° to 25°. Rudhyar suggests it emphasises the idea of “self-containment and good humour” … as a lifetime principle [Rudhyar, ‘Astrological Mandala’, pp 223].

So what’s the rest of this five-fold sequence all about? Why this focus on ‘self-containment and good humour’? I should probably explore this sequence more closely as it’s also focal in my own Progressed Lunations. Thinking cap … on!

Here’s the five Sabian metaphors associated with this part of the zodiac …

– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Sagittarius 21° … “A child and a dog wearing borrowed eye-glasses.”

– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Sagittarius 22° … “A chinese laundry.”

– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Sagittarius 23° … “A group of immigrants as they fulfill the requirements of entance in the new country.”

– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Sagittarius 24° … “A bluebird perched on the gate of a cottage.”

– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Sagittarius 25° … “A chubby boy on a hobby-horse.”

– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

That looks so random at first glance, doesn’t it!

But by Rudhyar’s account (‘Astrological Mandala’, pp 222-225) the ‘story’ buried in this sequence has a quite cheerful Sagittarian ‘growth in consciousness’ theme, one that goes something like this …

– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Sagittarius 21° … “… one’s practice of a martial or intellectual art, as taught by a master, accelerates a growth in consciousness … “

– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Sagittarius 22° … “… and by necessity, a degree of isolation. One is ‘alone but not lonely’, and at best self-contained and well-humoured …”

– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Sagittarius 23° … “… and yet for quite some time ‘in transition’ – neither here nor there – until a certain level of ‘poise’ has been reached …”

– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Sagittarius 24° … “… when an inner sense of peace, happiness, and contentment in one’s isolation is at last realized …”

– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Sagittarius 25° … “… which then, at best, radiates outwardly in some conspicuously playful and imaginative way.”

– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

I searched the internet for biographic material on Noel Tyl for confirmation of these themes but all I found was a multitude of smiley faced photos and sales pitches for his books and courses. I did spot an interesting comment in a later-life interview though, one that shows a rather playful, content man reflecting on his life of astrological study and his own nature …

“I am a performer, through and through. I can’t deny it. It is my birthright. I’ve been on opera stages, in advertising agencies, a million Seminars, and in a zillion consultations. I really and truly need to share what I know in a dramatic way.” http://www.themetaarts.com/arc…/2004march/interviews3.html

Radiant, smiley and playful. That’ll do me. Thanks Noel Tyl! One final delineation for a fan, on your way out. Much appreciated.
