Second Progressed New Moon Chart

According to Rudhyar’s ‘Progressed Lunation Cycle’ theory this chart reflects Joy Adamson’s life from 1960 (age 50) to her death.
Rudhyar theorised that the second progressed new moon after birth heralds the start of a third distinct chapter of a person’s life. For Joy Adamson this stage began in 1960, coincident with the publishing of her first book, ‘Born Free.’
Leyla Rael expands on Rudhyar’s thoughts about this later-life stage of the spiritual life process : “The third level presents the question: ‘Alright, now that you are an ‘individual’ and relatively free and autonomous, what next? It deals primarily with the ‘resocialisation’ of the individual who was originally and compulsively ‘socialised’ at the first level. But now, having passed through an individualizing process [second level] beset with transitional crises and life-problems, the individual has once again to establish a constructive, participatory connection with his or her society. In theory however, participation at this level is not merely determined by familial or cultural pressures or patterns. It should rather spring spontaneously from the individual’s objective assessment of themselves, and the meaning they have given to their life thus far. Perhaps most importantly, it has as a foundation the quality of the individual’s vision of (1) what is possible and (2) significant [to them] in life.” [Leyla Rael, ‘The Lunation Process in Astrological Guidance’, 1984, p.13]
So what does the progressed New Moon chart have to say about this new chapter of Joy Adamson’s life? As ever, the principle clue Rudhyar recommends to us is the zodiac degree upon which the progressed New Moon falls. On this occasion we’re directed to 20°03’ Pisces, whose Sabian Symbol is …

21° Pisces : “Under the watchful and kind eye of a Chinese servant, a little girl fondles a white lamb.”

… fascinating given the photo accompanying the chart. According to Rudhyar this Sabian Symbol is a metaphor for some sort of NAIVE HOPE nurtured by “a servant of the new evolution.” [‘Astrological Mandala’, p.282].
What sort of “naive hope” might this symbol refer to, and who might this “servant of the new evolution” be? Well, the biographical facts for Joy’s life after 1960 show an almost complete dedication to wildlife preservation and conservation based on what she’d learnt from her husband/mentor George Adamson – who indeed is most likely the “watchful Chinese servant” featured in the Sabian metaphor. The following from Noteable Biographies Dot Com …
“All three Born Free books were extremely popular, and films were made of each of them—the 1966 Born Free was the most popular. The stars of the film series, Virginia McKenna and her husband Bill Travers, were so moved by the Adamsons’ work that they later founded the Born Free Foundation in England to support wildlife conservation. It is estimated that the “Elsa” series and other Adamson books have been translated into at least thirty-five languages. According to Adrian House’s biography, ‘The Great Safari: The Lives of George and Joy Adamson’, Born Free served as inspiration for zoologist Iain Douglas-Hamilton, a major activist working to protect the African elephant from extinction. House also notes that anthropologist Desmond Morris credits Born Free with affecting an entire generation’s attitude towards animals.”
From the foregoing we can hark back to Joy’s Pre-Birth Lunation degree and finally see the “Relay Race” (Sabian) that features there, now brought to fruition as others take up the wildlife conservation ‘baton’ that Joy symbolically passed to them. More broadly, we can also detect the signature of the Sabian for Joy’s natal solar degree, specifically its prophecy that – at its highest potential – Joy Adamson might ultimately become some sort of ‘world opinion leader’ in her field.
In the end, I think it’d be fair to say that Rudhyar’s Lunation Cycle theory holds up very well to the scrutiny of Joy Adamson’s biography. Something new I learned from the study was that the potential indicated by a person’s solar degree may in some cases emerge in a slow and convoluted way and not manifest fully until years after the Second Progressed New Moon – this, something of a contrast to the process entertained by her fast-paced ’spiritual brother’, Martin Luther King.
