Second Progressed New Moon

(Age 45, c.2002, Hong Kong now under Chinese rule)
Rudhyar reckons the second progressed new moon after birth heralds the start of a third stage of a person’s life. For Mrs Lam this occurred in 2002, marking the beginning of a new lunation cycle that will see her through to 2032 and the age of 75.
“The third level then presents the question: ‘Alright, now that you are an ‘individual’ and relatively free and autonomous, what next? It deals primarily with the ‘resocialisation’ of the individual who was originally and compulsively ‘socialised’ at the first level. But now, having passed through an individualizing process [second level] beset with transitional crises and life-problems, the individual has once again to establish a constructive, participatory connection with his or her society. In theory however, participation at this level is not merely determined by familial or cultural pressures or patterns. It should rather spring spontaneously from the individual’s objective assessment of themselves, and the meaning they have given to their life thus far. Perhaps most importantly, it has as a foundation the quality of the individual’s *vision* of (1) what is possible and (2) significant [to them] in life.” [Leyla Rael, ‘The Lunation Process in Astrological Guidance’, 1984, p.13].
What does the progressed chart have to say about this stage of Mrs Lam’s life? As ever, the clue recommended to us is the zodiac degree upon which the progressed New Moon falls. On this occasion we’re directed to 5°54’ Cancer, coincidently a degree exactly conjunct to her natal Mars …

5°54’ Cancer : “Game birds feathering their nests.”

… according to Rudhyar, a symbol revealing some sort of “pioneering effort dedicated to the building of a new culture and new institutions.” [Dane Rudhyar, ‘An Astrological Mandala’, 1974, p.113-14].
What sort of “new culture and new institutions” might this symbol refer to? Well, with Hong Kong having reverted to Chinese rule in 1997 the biographical material makes it look likely a building of Chinese communist culture and institutions in Hong Kong is going to occupy our subject’s attention for most if not all of the cycle. Under the contemporary reality of her situation this is pretty much ALL that is “(1) possible and (2) significant” for Mrs Lam to achieve.
What of the progressed New Moon falling exactly upon the degree of Mars in the birth chart? I’ve been trawling my Rudhyar library for a precise delineation on this portent but have drawn a blank, other than a hint in the following words …
“When the new moon before birth occurs very close to one of the planets in the natal chart, this planet can be considered to be a channel of destiny for the life energies released through the personality of the native.” [Dane Rudhyar, ‘The Lunation Cycle’, 1971, p.122]
Perhaps we can extrapolate from this, that a similar phenomenon occurs when later a progressed new moon conjoins a particular planet in the natal chart ? In our present case study the suggestion would be that, for the ‘nest’ to be built successfully a Mars focus would be needed : hard work, something of a fighting spirit, and perhaps even ‘warfare’ in some or other sense will be involved if the transition to the “a new culture and new institutions” is to be achieved?
Interestingly, the exact midpoint of this cycle for Mrs Lam occurred around 2017. This is the Progressed Full Moon stage of the cycle where coincidentally the biography reveals Mrs Lam’s appointment to the highest office in her land (Hong Kong CEO) …
“Progressed Full Moon. Keyword : Fulfillment. This is the ‘change of gears’ point in the cycle. The symbolic seed planted at the time of the progressed New Moon now flowers. It can mean deep fulfillment and the beginning of a new process of conscious growth, or – if the challenges of the first half of the cycle were not squarely met – it can reveal the relative failure of the cycle, producing a deep seated disturbance.” [Leyla Rael, ‘The Lunation Process in Astrological Guidance’, 1984, p.23]
And this brings us to where we find Mrs Lam today, roughly two years past the mid-point of her current 30-year cycle, and facing, as we see each day in the media, a violent reaction to the vast nest building project she’s apparently been charged with leading.
Mrs Lam’s life story of course is far from over, but as we have seen, the simplistic potential described by the natal chart does appear to have been unfolding for her as it was written in the stars, built as though in chapters, cycle upon cycle. Mrs Lam seems to have been playing her part [i.e Gibbeous Lunation type] appropriately, and the broad destiny indicated by the natal Sun appears to have been unfolding, just as Rudhyar helped us conceive of it in the natal chart …
“About all we can do is look to the five-stage sequence in which the natal Sun falls i.e Taurus 21° to Taurus 25°. This hints of a life that begins with ‘a state of subservience to collective values’ (Taurus 21°] and – at best – ends with ‘a feeling of belonging to a large, organised, peaceful whole.’ (Taurus 25°)” [Dane Rudhyar, ‘An Astrological Mandala’, 1974, pp.83-86].
